On a Thursday afternoon, February 15, 2018, Marc Devoe, a 34-year-old man, was out with a coworker to get lunch in Lowell, Massachusetts. What began as a simple errand escalated into a fatal encounter that ended his life. While on the road, Devoe was involved in a traffic dispute that appeared to be a random act of road rage. Following the altercation, he was shot once in the chest.
Despite the grave injury, Devoe managed to drive a short distance before crashing his vehicle into a
cement barrier near the Gallagher Transportation Terminal on Thorndike Street. Emergency services responded to the crash on YMCA Drive around 12:40 p.m. and transported him to Lowell General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The incident left his family and friends devastated by the sudden and violent loss.
The investigation quickly led to the arrest of a 20-year-old Lowell woman, Graciela Paulino. Authorities identified her as the shooter, alleging that she followed Devoe after their traffic dispute before firing the fatal shot. Investigators also discovered a message Paulino posted on Facebook shortly after the shooting. She was charged with murder and pleaded not guilty, with her defense attorneys arguing that she acted in self-defense, claiming Devoe had been the aggressor.
In October 2019, a Middlesex Superior Court jury convicted Graciela Paulino of voluntary manslaughter and firearms charges. The verdict concluded a trial that examined the tragic outcome of a momentary conflict on the road, bringing a measure of closure to a case that began with a senseless act of violence.
