On a cold February morning in Lowell, Massachusetts, the life of 24-year-old Anthony Luna was cut short in a sudden act of violence. In the pre-dawn hours of February 17, 2018, police responded to reports of a shooting at the intersection of O'Connell and Fay Streets. There, they discovered Luna inside a Mercedes-Benz, suffering from fatal gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to Lowell General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, two men were seen fleeing the area. These individuals were quickly apprehended by police and identified as 21-year-old Christian Tripp-Kirwin and 21-year-old Joseph Luna, the victim's cousin. Both men, who had been in the vehicle with Anthony Luna when the shooting occurred, were found to be in possession of a firearm, though it was determined not to be the weapon used in the homicide. They were subsequently arrested on firearms charges, but the investigation into who killed Anthony Luna remained open and active. Joseph Luna had also sustained a gunshot wound to the elbow during the incident and was treated at a local hospital.
For over a year, the case of Anthony Luna's death lingered, an unsolved tragedy for his family and the community. Then, in March 2019, a significant breakthrough occurred in the investigation. Following a grand jury indictment, authorities arrested 22-year-old Joseph McGillicuddy of Lowell and charged him with the murder of Anthony Luna. McGillicuddy was also indicted on charges of possession of a firearm with a silencer, possession of a loaded firearm without a license, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. The Middlesex District Attorney's office stated that all the men involved were known to each other, suggesting a complex set of relationships that culminated in a senseless act of gun violence. Joseph McGillicuddy pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him and was held without bail.
