On a Tuesday evening in Lowell, Massachusetts, a dispute over a blocked roadway tragically escalated, ending the life of a promising 26-year-old Black / African American male, Louis Odogwu Ganobi. Born in Enugu, Nigeria, on June 6, 1996, Ganobi was a student at Middlesex Community College, with aspirations of graduating with a degree in Criminal Justice. He was also employed as a security guard and was known by family and friends as a caring, loving, and hardworking individual who was easy to get along with.

The fatal encounter occurred on November 15, 2022, at the intersection of Maitland Avenue and Chelmsford Street. A car, driven by Anastasia Svay with her boyfriend, Rafael Garcia-Rey, as a passenger, had stopped in the middle of the dead-end street. Ganobi, attempting to pass, exited his vehicle and a verbal altercation ensued. The argument quickly intensified, and Garcia-Rey, who was 21 years old at the time, fatally shot Ganobi. Following the shooting, Ganobi was rushed to Lowell General Hospital and then transferred to Tufts Medical Center in Boston, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day. An autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.

After the incident, Garcia-Rey and Svay fled to Hudson, New Hampshire. The investigation into Ganobi's death was a collaborative effort involving the Middlesex District Attorney's Office, the Lowell Police Department, and Massachusetts State Police Detectives. On November 24, 2022, Rafael Garcia-Rey surrendered to the Norton, Massachusetts Police Department. He was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the murder.

During the legal proceedings, it was revealed that Garcia-Rey had made efforts to obstruct justice. He colluded with his girlfriend, Anastasia Svay, who was a witness for the prosecution, persuading her with money to hide from authorities and change her phone number to avoid testifying. Despite her absence, the trial proceeded, and a jury convicted Garcia-Rey. He was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Louis Odogwu Ganobi. Additional sentences were handed down for carrying a firearm without a license and carrying a loaded firearm. Subsequently, law enforcement located and charged Svay with accepting a bribe to influence her testimony as a witness.
