In the quiet hours of a late December evening in Lowell, Massachusetts, the life of 24-year-old Nikhl Israni was brought to an abrupt and violent end. On the night of December 30, 2024, Israni was shot multiple times while sitting in his own car near the intersection of Middlesex and Maude Streets. The young man was rushed to Lowell General Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced deceased.
The preliminary investigation by law enforcement suggests a chilling
sequence of events. Israni was reportedly in his vehicle with another man when the shooting occurred. Authorities allege that the passenger, identified as 20-year-old Bravindah Mawanda of Lowell, fired the fatal shots. After the shooting, Mawanda allegedly fled the car and ran to his nearby home. Responding to reports of a person in the roadway shortly before 8:00 p.m., Lowell Police discovered Israni suffering from gunshot wounds.
Following the incident, police were able to identify Mawanda as the suspect. A search of his home uncovered a firearm that is believed to be consistent with the wounds Israni sustained. Mawanda was subsequently arrested and is facing charges in connection with the fatal shooting. He was scheduled for arraignment in Lowell District Court. The investigation into the motive and the specifics of the case is ongoing, conducted by the Lowell Police Department, the Middlesex District Attorney's Office, and Massachusetts State Police Detectives.
Nikhl, known to friends and family as "Nicc," was remembered as a cherished son, brother, and friend whose presence could illuminate any room. Born on August 6, 2000, he was known for his kind and generous spirit. He found joy on the basketball court and in creating music, writing lyrics, and crafting melodies. His unexpected passing has left his family and a wide circle of friends to mourn a life cut tragically short.
