In the summer of 2014, a quiet mobile home in Paoli, Indiana, became the scene of a brutal crime that would claim the lives of two men and leave a third seriously injured. On June 23rd, 56-year-old Nicholas Fields, a male resident of the home, was found shot to death inside his trailer. The grim discovery was part of a triple shooting that also resulted in the death of 25-year-old Corey Michael Harris and left 29-year-old Daniel Smitson wounded with a gunshot to the mouth.
The
investigation into the violent encounter quickly revealed it was not a random act of violence. The motive, as uncovered by Indiana State Police, was rooted in drugs. Three men, Elbert Edward Brooks, James L. Davidson, and John R. Carpenter, had traveled to Fields' home with the intention of obtaining methamphetamine. According to a confession from Brooks, he remained in their vehicle while Davidson and Carpenter went inside the mobile home. It was then that gunshots erupted, leading to the tragic outcome. In the aftermath of the shootings, guns were stolen from Fields' residence and later discarded in a river.
A manhunt for the three suspects ensued, and within days, all were in custody. Elbert Brooks was the first to be apprehended, followed by James Davidson, who was found at his brother's home. The final suspect, John R. Carpenter, was discovered in a barn after police established a perimeter in Harrison County. The trio faced a litany of serious charges, including two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and one count of robbery. Davidson and Carpenter were also charged as habitual criminals.
The legal process brought a measure of closure to the families of the victims. Elbert Brooks pleaded guilty to murder and attempted robbery in January 2015 and received a 100-year sentence. John Carpenter was convicted by a jury of murder, voluntary manslaughter, and robbery, resulting in a 50-year prison term. The last to be sentenced was James Davidson, who pleaded guilty to robbery resulting in serious bodily injury. In exchange for his plea, the murder and attempted murder charges against him were dropped, and he was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
