In the small town of Paoli, Indiana, a domestic dispute escalated into a horrific tragedy, claiming the life of 6-year-old Leon Gehl. The devastating events unfolded on a Tuesday evening when a physical altercation broke out between his parents, Jeremy Gehl and Melissa Randolph, inside their home on North Helm Street.
The argument turned violent when Jeremy Gehl, 37, attacked his estranged wife, Melissa, with a knife, stabbing her multiple times.
Hearing the commotion, young Leon and his 3-year-old sister, Addison, came downstairs. It was then that their father turned a shotgun on them. After shooting his children, Jeremy Gehl took his own life.
When authorities arrived at the scene, they found Melissa Randolph outside the home, bleeding and holding her unharmed 1-year-old child. Inside, the scene was one of unimaginable horror. Jeremy Gehl was pronounced dead at the scene. Both Leon and Addison were airlifted to Kosair Children's Hospital in critical condition. Tragically, Addison was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. Leon, a kindergartner at Throop Elementary, fought for his life but succumbed to his injuries two days later. His mother, Melissa Randolph, was initially taken to a different hospital but was later transferred to be with her children. She survived the brutal attack.
In the wake of the tragedy, the community of Paoli was left in shock, leaving balloons, flowers, and stuffed animals outside the family's home as a memorial. A vigil was held at Central Baptist Church to honor the mother and her children. The investigation by Indiana State Police concluded that the incident was a murder-suicide. As Jeremy Gehl died at the scene, there were no arrests or subsequent trial. It was later revealed that Melissa Randolph had previously sought a protective order against her husband, which had been granted but was set to expire just days after the tragic event.
