In the quiet city of Fort Wayne, Indiana, a heartbreaking story unfolded on the morning of January 18, 2023. Seven-year-old Oscar L. Beck, a white male, was found deceased in his home in the 1100 block of Skyline Pass. The discovery was made by a relative who immediately alerted the authorities, bringing a swift response from the Fort Wayne Police Department. At the scene, officers also found Oscar's mother, 43-year-old Kari Lynn Beck, deceased.
Both had sustained gunshot wounds.
The subsequent investigation by the Allen County Coroner's Office brought a grim clarity to the tragic events. An autopsy revealed that Oscar had died from a gunshot wound to the chest, and his death was officially ruled a homicide. His mother, Kari, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, and her death was ruled a suicide. The investigation concluded that Kari Beck had shot and killed her son before taking her own life in a devastating murder-suicide. As the perpetrator was also deceased, no arrests were made in connection with Oscar's death.
Oscar was a first-grade student at Concordia Lutheran Elementary School, where his mother also worked as a kindergarten aide. He was remembered as an active and energetic boy, involved in various sports such as YMCA basketball and football, as well as wrestling and Little League baseball. The community was left to mourn the profound loss of a young life cut short under the most tragic of circumstances. A service to celebrate Oscar's life was held at Concordia Lutheran Church, where friends, family, and community members gathered to remember the bright and beloved little boy.
