In the early morning hours of Saturday, February 4, 2023, the life of 18-year-old Kenzel Bones was tragically cut short inside a convenience store on the west side of Indianapolis. The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. at the Michigan Food Market, situated near the intersection of West Michigan Street and Holt Road. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched to the location following a report of a person shot.
Upon their arrival, they discovered a male victim inside the store with an apparent gunshot wound. Medical personnel pronounced him deceased at the scene. The Marion County Coroner's Office later identified the young man as Kenzel Bones.
The investigation into the shooting quickly moved forward as detectives utilized surveillance footage from the Michigan Food Market. The video evidence reportedly provided a clear image of the individual who entered the store armed with a gun and shot Bones. An IMPD detective received a tip from within the department suggesting that 19-year-old Curtis Williams might be the suspect. Further investigation, including the use of cellphone location data, placed Williams' phone at the convenience store at the time the fatal shooting occurred, corroborating the initial tip. This crucial information allowed law enforcement to focus their efforts on locating and apprehending the suspected shooter.
On Thursday, February 16, 2023, investigators executed a search warrant which led to the location and arrest of Curtis Williams. During the search, officers discovered multiple firearms, one of which was equipped with a Glock switch, and various narcotics. As a result, Williams was taken into custody and faces a preliminary charge of murder in connection with the death of Kenzel Bones. In addition to the murder charge, he was arrested on several preliminary drug and gun-related offenses, including dealing and possession of a controlled substance, dealing marijuana, possession of a machine gun, possession of marijuana, and maintaining a common nuisance. Four other individuals were also arrested on gun and drug charges in connection with the execution of the search warrant. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will be responsible for reviewing the case and making the final charging decisions.
