On March 27, 2023, a fatal shooting occurred at the Maple Creek Village Apartments in the 3800 block of West Michigan Street on Indianapolis's near west side. Coreon Ta'Rell Waites, a 17-year-old, was found by police in the apartment building’s common stairwell with gunshot injuries. The incident was reported around 6:40 p.m., and witnesses stated that Waites was shot outside building 21 and then ran into the stairwell for help just after 6:30 p.m..
