On the evening of Thursday, December 18, 2025, a violent incident occurred on the west side of Indianapolis, Indiana, resulting in the untimely death of 37-year-old Corey Lynn Howell. The male victim was discovered by law enforcement officers who were dispatched to the 3900 block of Gateway Court, located near the intersection of 38th Street and North High School Road, following reports of a shooting around 8:00 p.m.
Upon arrival, first responders found Howell suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene by the Marion County Coroner’s Office.
Preliminary investigations by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department revealed that the shooting likely stemmed from an altercation. Detectives learned that Howell was in or near a vehicle when multiple individuals approached him. A confrontation ensued, escalating rapidly until shots were fired. Following the gunfire, the subjects fled the scene on foot, running in an unknown direction. Born in Indianapolis, Howell was a father of three children and a cherished member of his family, known for his unfiltered sense of humor and an ability to bring lightness to those around him. He was employed at Harden's Home Care Services and also worked as a part-time forklift driver. His death marked a tragic compounding of loss for his loved ones, as he passed away just days before the anniversary of his brother's death, who had died on Christmas Day in 2009. Howell is survived by his mother, father, children, and a large extended family who remembered him as a genuine spirit with a playful nature.
