In the early morning hours of Monday, April 10, 2023, a grim discovery was made in the Haughville neighborhood of Indianapolis, Indiana. Around 4:30 a.m., a passerby on their way to work spotted a person lying in an alley near the intersection of West 10th Street and King Avenue. Police officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s Southwest District responded to the scene to investigate the report of a person shot.
Upon arrival, they located an unresponsive male victim who had sustained fatal injuries consistent with a shooting. He was pronounced dead at the scene, marking the first homicide in the Haughville neighborhood for the year 2023.
The victim was subsequently identified by the Marion County Coroner’s Office as 36-year-old African American male Christopher Lamar Porter. Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Porter had relocated to Indianapolis where he was employed at a local Red Lobster restaurant. Known affectionately to his friends and family as 'Lil Chris,' he was remembered as a helpful and family-oriented individual who had been married and was a father. His death came as a shock to his community, with local activists expressing frustration over the continuing violence and urging anyone with knowledge of the crime to come forward.
As of the last available reports following the incident, homicide detectives had not identified a specific motive for the killing, nor had they released information regarding any suspects or arrests connected to Porter's death. Investigators believed that he had been killed sometime late Sunday night or in the very early hours of Monday morning, several hours before his body was discovered. The police appealed to the public for assistance, asking residents in the area to share any surveillance footage or information that could lead to those responsible for the fatal shooting.
