In the early morning hours of April 14, 2023, the life of 33-year-old Jessica Nicole Cruz was tragically cut short in a violent shooting on Indianapolis' near east side. The incident unfolded in the 3500 block of Brookside Parkway South Drive, where officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a report of a person shot shortly after 4 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered a grim scene with three individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.

Jessica Cruz was one of two women who succumbed to their injuries. Another woman, identified as 18-year-old Jersey Castner, was also killed in the attack. One woman died at the scene, while Cruz was transported to a hospital where she later passed away. A third victim, a teenage boy, was also shot and was last reported to be in critical condition. Several children were present in the home at the time of the shooting but were physically unharmed.

Investigators believe the shooting was not a random act of violence. It is thought that one or more individuals forced their way into the residence, leading to gunfire both inside and outside the home. The police have suggested that the victims were likely targeted. Despite the targeted nature of the attack, authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the double homicide. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has appealed to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the case.
