On April 22, 2023, a violent incident occurred at a Shell gas station located at 34th Street and Emerson Avenue in Indianapolis, Indiana. Jaquareous Rashawn Tyreik Mitchell, a 26-year-old male, and his older brother, Jimmy Jermaine Thomas Jr., stopped at the convenience store while running errands to pick up pizza and soda. Inside the establishment, a confrontation ensued involving a third individual, leading to gunfire. First responders arrived to find both brothers suffering from gunshot wounds. Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene, while Thomas was transported to Methodist Hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Detectives with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department launched a homicide investigation, utilizing evidence collected from the scene to identify a suspect. Fingerprints recovered from a two-liter soda bottle inside the store, combined with surveillance footage of the shooting, pointed authorities toward 20-year-old Martice McGee. Investigators determined that McGee had been at the gas station to purchase a drink when the encounter occurred. He was subsequently apprehended and taken into custody, initially facing two counts of murder for the deaths of the brothers.

Legal proceedings against McGee concluded nearly two years later. In February 2025, McGee entered a guilty plea to two counts of voluntary manslaughter, admitting to his role in the fatal shooting. On April 16, 2025, a judge sentenced him to 22 years in prison. During the sentencing hearing, the victims' mother, Sellerstine Ray, expressed her enduring grief, stating that while the sentence could not bring her sons back, she had to accept the court's decision. McGee offered an apology to the family in the courtroom, claiming he never intended for the situation to escalate, though the victims' family remained skeptical of his remorse.
