On a Sunday morning in Indianapolis, the life of 15-year-old Jeremiah Lewis was tragically cut short. The male teenager was discovered inside a vehicle on June 18, 2023, in the 2000 block of Lohr Drive on the city's far west side, suffering from gunshot wounds. Before coming to a stop, the car he was driving had veered off the road, striking a mailbox and another vehicle parked in a driveway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence but a targeted event.
The investigation into Jeremiah's death revealed a plot allegedly orchestrated by a 14-year-old girl. This girl later admitted to police that she had arranged to meet with Jeremiah under the pretense of buying marijuana, but had actually set him up to be robbed. Waiting in ambush were two other teenagers, 19-year-old Wardell Wright and 19-year-old Brenden Dixson. According to the 14-year-old's account to detectives, Wright and Dixson concealed themselves in bushes at a traffic circle, lying in wait for Jeremiah to arrive.
When Jeremiah pulled up, Wright and Dixson approached his car to rob him. The situation escalated tragically, and they opened fire on his vehicle. A neighbor's surveillance camera captured footage of the two firing what appeared to be an AR-style pistol and a handgun at the car. At the time of the incident, Wright was on GPS monitoring from a previous case, which placed him at the scene of the crime. All three teenagers were subsequently arrested in connection with the fatal shooting.
The case against the three suspects moved through the justice system, resulting in convictions and significant prison sentences. The 14-year-old girl's case was adjudicated in the juvenile court system. Brenden Dixson pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted robbery resulting in serious bodily injury and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Following a one-day jury trial, Wardell Wright was found guilty of two counts of murder and one count of robbery resulting in serious bodily injury. A judge subsequently sentenced him to serve 68 years in prison for his role in Jeremiah Lewis's death.
