A simple act of kindness cost Ryan Thomas his life on a Tuesday in Indianapolis. The 31-year-old male had stopped to help a stranger, Andre George, who was dealing with a disabled vehicle at a Marathon gas station on the city's northwest side on March 30, 2021. What began as a gesture of goodwill tragically escalated into a fatal encounter, forever altering the lives of two families.
During the course of receiving assistance, an altercation erupted between the two men.
The dispute reportedly stemmed from damage allegedly caused to George's vehicle. In a senseless act of violence, Andre George admitted to firing his handgun at Ryan Thomas twice as Thomas was attempting to leave the scene. The gunshots found their mark, and though wounded, Thomas managed to drive away from the gas station before crashing his vehicle into a nearby house in the 4000 block of West 71st Street.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers who were in the vicinity investigating a separate report of a shot fired in a nearby apartment complex were soon called to the scene of the crash. There, they discovered Ryan Thomas suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he succumbed to his injuries. The subsequent investigation quickly linked the two incidents. A card belonging to Thomas was found in a purse that was with George, and the handgun in George’s possession was determined to be the weapon used in the shooting.
The wheels of justice began to turn for Ryan Thomas. Andre George was arrested and, in December 2022, a jury found him guilty of the murder of the man who had stopped to offer him aid. Following his conviction, George was sentenced to 55 years in the Indiana Department of Correction, with 50 years to be executed and five years of probation. The tragic case serves as a somber reminder of how a moment of anger can lead to an irreversible and devastating outcome.
