In the early morning hours of June 25, 2023, a vibrant scene in the Broad Ripple entertainment district of Indianapolis turned chaotic and tragic. Amidst a large crowd of several hundred people, tensions between different groups escalated, leading to a physical altercation. What began as a disturbance quickly spiraled into deadly violence when gunfire erupted, forever altering the lives of many. Twenty-four-year-old Tywain Henning, a Black male, was caught in the mayhem and fatally shot.
Two other individuals, 22-year-old Christopher Lee Wilson Jr. and 22-year-old Kaleyia Preer, also lost their lives in the shooting, while a fourth person was wounded but survived.
The investigation into the deadly shooting was extensive, with law enforcement utilizing surveillance footage from area businesses, officer body cameras, and social media to piece together the events of that night. According to a probable cause affidavit, the incident was precipitated by a fight. A witness identified 24-year-old Kara Hinds as the shooter, stating that after being punched in the back of the head, Hinds turned and began firing a Glock pistol into the crowd. Although both Wilson and Henning were reportedly armed, the chaotic nature of the scene made it unclear if anyone in the group fighting with Hinds had fired any shots.
Following a thorough investigation that included the collection of forensic evidence, such as fired shell casings and a hat with a bullet hole that reportedly belonged to Hinds, authorities identified her as a person of interest. Kara Hinds was arrested on October 5, 2023, and subsequently charged with two counts of murder, one count of reckless homicide, two counts of battery, and one count of criminal recklessness. During an interview with investigators, Hinds claimed that she felt she was acting in self-defense.
In August 2025, a jury found Kara Hinds guilty on two counts of murder, one count of reckless homicide, and one count of criminal recklessness. She was found not guilty of battery by means of a deadly weapon and battery resulting in serious bodily injury. On September 12, 2025, Kara Hinds was sentenced to 113 years in prison for her role in the shooting that claimed the lives of Tywain Henning, Christopher Lee Wilson Jr., and Kaleyia Preer. During the emotional sentencing hearing, family members of the victims described Hinds as a 'cold blooded murderer' and expressed their grief over the senseless loss of their loved ones.
