In the late hours of a summer night in Indianapolis, on July 28, 2023, the life of 18-year-old Antwain Turentine Jr. was tragically cut short. The young man was sitting inside a parked vehicle at a Shell gas station located at 3402 N. Emerson Avenue when he was fatally wounded by gunfire. First responders found him wounded and quickly transported him to IU Health Methodist Hospital, but he did not survive his injuries.
The investigation into the homicide revealed that the suspect likely
fled the scene on foot immediately after the shooting. Despite the efforts of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department an arrest has not yet been made in connection with the case. In March 2025, investigators renewed their appeal to the public for assistance, specifically asking for help in identifying an individual who was present at the gas station just before midnight on the night of the incident. The lead detective on the case, Douglas Swalis, has been designated as the point of contact for any potential information, with the option for tips to be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana.
The violent death of Antwain Turentine Jr. highlighted a troubling pattern of violence at the particular gas station, which had been the site of four homicides within a four-month period. This series of tragic events prompted Turentine's mother to publicly call for the business to be shut down to prevent further loss of life. In response to the ongoing safety concerns, the gas station's management has reportedly entered into a trespass agreement with law enforcement and enrolled in a police camera program that provides investigators with live stream access and recorded video to aid in future investigations.
