In the early hours of October 21, 2023, a Halloween party on the east side of Indianapolis tragically ended in the death of 15-year-old Edwin Simon-Osorio. The gathering, which had grown large and unruly, became the scene of a fatal shooting that claimed the young man's life. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a call just before 2 a.m. and found Simon-Osorio with a gunshot wound inside a vehicle near the intersection of North Emerson Avenue and East 21st Street.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators later determined the shooting had occurred on East 20th Street.
Witnesses at the party described a tense atmosphere leading up to the shooting. Alan Peregrino, then 16 years old, was reportedly intoxicated and behaving erratically, brandishing two firearms. Accounts suggest that Simon-Osorio had pleaded with Peregrino to put the weapons away. According to court documents, Peregrino allegedly dismissed the pleas, stating, 'Na, na. Imma start shooting.' Shortly after this exchange, Simon-Osorio was fatally shot. The investigation into his death continued for nearly eight months, culminating in the arrest of Peregrino, who was 17 at the time of his apprehension.
Following an extensive investigation that included witness statements and forensic analysis, Alan Peregrino was formally charged with the murder of Edwin Simon-Osorio on June 10, 2024. Evidence gathered by police included bullet casings from the scene that were matched to a 9mm Glock 17 associated with Peregrino. Witnesses also identified him from a photo array, and video footage from the party corroborated accounts of his threatening behavior. In addition to the murder charge, Peregrino faces a host of other serious offenses, including kidnapping while hijacking a vehicle, armed robbery, criminal recklessness, pointing a firearm at another, unlawful carrying of a handgun, and dangerous possession of a firearm by a minor. These additional charges stemmed from a carjacking that Peregrino was allegedly involved in shortly after the shooting, which ultimately led to his capture. His legal proceedings were scheduled to begin with a pretrial conference on June 18, 2024.
