In the early morning hours of October 21, 2023, a fatal encounter unfolded outside a liquor store on Georgetown Road in Indianapolis. Abel Isaias Ramos Utuy, a 29-year-old male, was shot multiple times and later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. The incident, which occurred around 1:30 a.m., stemmed from what appeared to be a brief and trivial dispute.

Ja'Que Mason was identified as the shooter. According to accounts from witnesses and Mason himself, Ramos Utuy had parked next to Mason's vehicle and went into the liquor store. When he came out, a verbal exchange began. Mason claimed that Ramos Utuy seemed intoxicated and that he fired his weapon because he saw the other man reach for something. However, Mason also admitted to investigators that he never actually saw a weapon on Ramos Utuy, and no firearm was recovered from the victim or his vehicle.

The investigation was aided by a 911 call from a woman who provided information about the shooting. In a subsequent call with detectives, a man believed to be Mason's father stated he thought his son was involved. Shortly thereafter, Ja'Que Mason, accompanied by his mother and other witnesses, went to the IMPD Homicide office. Video surveillance from the store captured the interaction, showing a brief conversation before Ramos Utuy moved toward his vehicle. It was at this point that Mason drew his handgun and fired as Ramos Utuy turned away.

A jury found Ja'Que Mason guilty of the murder of Abel Ramos Utuy. Following the conviction, a judge sentenced him to 45 years in the Indiana Department of Correction, with an additional five years suspended. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office noted that this tragic event was an example of how simple disputes can escalate to deadly violence, a leading cause of homicides in the community.
