On an autumn day in Evansville, Indiana, the life of 37-year-old Mitchell Kent Greathouse was tragically cut short. On October 22, 2023, he was discovered deceased inside a residence on Mt. Vernon Avenue, alongside another man, 31-year-old Michael Blankenship Jr. The discovery prompted a homicide investigation by local authorities. Mitchell, a graduate of New Harmony High School, was remembered for his contagious smile and his love of dancing.
He cherished spending time with his son, particularly when they were golfing or fishing together.
The investigation into the double homicide led to a series of arrests as police unraveled the events of that fatal day. One of the first to be apprehended was 30-year-old Richard Garrett, who admitted to being the getaway driver. He informed investigators that he believed they were going to commit a robbery and was surprised when he heard gunshots from inside the home. His passenger returned to the vehicle covered in blood. Garrett was subsequently charged with robbery, obstruction of justice, and assisting a criminal.
Further investigation identified John Cameron Parker and Caden Wayne Harms as the individuals directly involved in the murders. The case against Parker was built on a foundation of video footage, testimony from a co-conspirator, DNA evidence, and ballistics. In June 2024, a jury found John Cameron Parker guilty of two counts of murder. He was later sentenced to 110 years in prison, receiving 55 years for each victim, with the sentences to be served consecutively.
Caden Wayne Harms chose a different legal path, reaching a plea agreement with prosecutors in May 2024. As a result of his plea, he was sentenced to a 45-year prison term for his role in the deaths of Greathouse and Blankenship. A fourth individual, 27-year-old Melecia Williams, was also implicated in the case. She faced charges of failing to report the discovery of the bodies, burglary, and obstruction of justice, adding another layer to the complex investigation that followed the untimely deaths.
