In the early morning hours of May 23, 2017, the life of 22-year-old DeNiko L. Scott was tragically cut short in Evansville, Indiana. A former standout basketball player for Harrison High School, Scott was discovered deceased in the 400 block of South Morton Avenue. A neighbor had spotted a person down and alerted the authorities at 8:10 a.m.
Upon their arrival, Evansville Police Department officers found Scott with at least one gunshot wound.
The Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office later conducted an autopsy which confirmed that the young, Black / African American man had died from a single gunshot wound to the head. His death was officially ruled a homicide. Scott, who was known for his sense of humor and loyalty, was a father and enjoyed spending time with his son.
Despite a thorough investigation by the Evansville Police Department, which included canvassing the neighborhood and collecting evidence, no arrests have ever been made in connection with DeNiko Scott's murder. The case grew cold and remains unsolved, leaving a void in the lives of his family and friends who still await justice. Law enforcement has previously asked for the public's assistance in providing any information that could lead to a breakthrough in the case.
