On a Monday afternoon in north Minneapolis, the life of 20-year-old Antonio Vernon Harper, a Black male, was cut short in a burst of gunfire. The fatal encounter unfolded on November 6, 2023, in the 3300 block of Dupont Avenue North. Around 4:45 p.m., police responded to numerous 911 calls reporting a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Harper behind a house, lying face down with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso.
Despite the immediate life-saving efforts of the officers and his subsequent transport to North Memorial Health Hospital, Harper succumbed to a gunshot wound to the chest. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner officially ruled his death a homicide.
The investigation into Harper's death quickly pointed to a targeted and violent ambush, believed to be rooted in gang conflict. Harper was with two other individuals when three assailants, their faces obscured by masks, emerged from a blue sedan and began shooting. Investigators determined that three different 9mm handguns were used in the attack. As Harper and his companions attempted to flee into a nearby backyard for safety, he was struck by the gunfire. The shooters then sped away from the scene in their vehicle, which was later identified as a stolen blue Toyota Camry. One of Harper's friends later told police the shooting was gang-related, identifying Harper and his associates as members of the 'Highs' gang and the assailants as members of the rival 'Lowz' street gang.
A significant break in the case came from a combination of witness testimony, surveillance footage, and digital evidence. An 18-year-old from Robbinsdale, Jahon Ronnell Lynch, was identified as a primary suspect. Surveillance video captured Lynch driving the stolen Camry at a McDonald's drive-thru approximately an hour before the shooting, wearing clothing that matched a witness's description of one of the shooters. Furthermore, cellphone data placed him in the vicinity of the crime at the time of the murder.
Two days after the shooting, police spotted the suspect vehicle. The driver, later identified as Lynch, attempted to flee but was eventually apprehended along with a passenger, found hiding under a porch. Lynch was arrested and subsequently charged with second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder in connection with the death of Antonio Vernon Harper. He was booked into jail to await his court appearance.
