In the quiet, rural setting of Cass Township in LaPorte County, Indiana, the life of 33-year-old Jeremiah J. Wetzel was tragically cut short on a Monday night in May of 2020. The events of that evening unfolded in the 8200 west block of County Road 1500 South, where LaPorte County sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a residence. Upon their arrival at approximately 8:15 p.m., they encountered a person leaving the home and promptly took them into custody.
Once inside the residence, officers discovered Jeremiah Wetzel suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite any efforts to render aid, he was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy later confirmed that his death was a homicide. The individual taken into custody was identified as Jeremiah's father, 58-year-old Jason Wetzel of Wanatah. He was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of his son.
The legal proceedings that followed painted a complex picture of the events that transpired. In September 2022, a jury found Jason Wetzel not guilty of the murder of his son. However, the jury could not reach a verdict on a separate charge of aggravated battery. This led to the judge declaring a mistrial on that specific count.
The matter did not end there, as the state decided to retry Jason Wetzel on the charge of aggravated battery. In August 2024, following a two-day bench trial, a judge found Jason Wetzel guilty of aggravated battery, a Level 3 felony. The conviction also included a sentencing enhancement for the use of a firearm. Jason Wetzel was held at the La Porte County Jail on a $1 million cash bond following his initial arrest.
