On a tragic Wednesday in Mishawaka, Indiana, the life of Dr. Todd Graham, a 56-year-old physician, was cut short in a senseless act of violence. The events of July 26, 2017, unfolded after Dr. Graham, a respected orthopedic surgeon, made a professional medical decision that would have unforeseen and fatal consequences. Earlier that day, he had seen a new patient who was accompanied by her husband, Michael Jarvis. The patient was seeking powerful opioid painkillers, but after his evaluation, Dr.
Graham declined to prescribe them, adhering to his medical judgment.
Following the appointment, an angered Michael Jarvis returned to the medical complex alone about two hours later. He confronted Dr. Graham in the parking lot of the St. Joseph Rehabilitation Institute, which was next to Dr. Graham's office.
