In the early morning hours of December 3, 2023, a dispute outside a house party in Bloomington, Indiana, escalated into a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 23-year-old Tyriq David Bridgwaters. The incident, which also left a 19-year-old man injured, unfolded in the 500 block of South Park Avenue. Bridgwaters, a Bloomington resident, was a talented athlete who had won a national AAU Junior Olympics championship in shot put and discus.
He was also a gifted musician and poet, known for his rap compositions.
The chain of events began when three men, including 21-year-old Isaiah Ramos of Linton, were denied entry to a large house party. Witnesses reported that one of the individuals had a visible handgun in their waistband, which led to their refusal at the door. An argument and physical altercation ensued, spilling into a nearby alley. It was then that Ramos allegedly began firing a handgun into the crowd. Bridgwaters was struck in the chest by the gunfire and, despite life-saving efforts by officers who arrived at the scene, succumbed to his injuries.
Following the shooting, a description of the suspect was broadcast to law enforcement. An Indiana State Police trooper conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with a passenger matching the description, who was identified as Isaiah Ramos. A handgun was discovered inside the vehicle, and all three occupants were taken into custody for questioning. Ramos was subsequently arrested and preliminarily charged with murder and criminal recklessness.
In November 2025, it was reported that Isaiah Ramos had reached a plea agreement. Under the terms of the deal, the murder charge was dropped, and Ramos pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. The agreement included a recommended sentence of 20 years. According to the Monroe County Chief Deputy Prosecutor, Ramos testified that he was outnumbered during the altercation and feared the use of a gun, though it was stated that his actions did not constitute self-defense. A judge is scheduled to sentence Ramos in January.
