McFadden attempted to mislead investigators by filing a false police report, claiming his vehicle had been stolen from a gas station in Indianapolis on the night of the murder. However, his story unraveled when cell phone records placed him in Bloomington at the time of the shooting. He was arrested on October 28, 2020, when he went to the Bloomington Police Department to claim his impounded car. The second suspect, 23-year-old Keshawn Bess, also from Indianapolis, was apprehended on November 24, 2020. The third suspect, Malik Bennett, managed to evade capture for over three years before he was finally taken into custody in March 2024.
The legal proceedings brought a measure of justice for Damon Brown's family. Jamal McFadden was convicted of murder and robbery resulting in serious bodily injury. He was initially sentenced to 86 years, which was later reduced to a 56-year sentence after an appeal. Keshawn Bess, identified as the individual who shot Brown, was found guilty on charges of murder and robbery. In 2023, he was sentenced to 60 years in prison without the possibility of parole.
