In the early hours of Christmas Eve 2023, a violent ambush on the streets of Fort Wayne, Indiana, set in motion a chain of events that would ultimately claim the life of Javion Jaquan Grandberry, a 25-year-old Black male. At approximately 3:12 a.m. on December 24th, police responded to reports of gunfire in the 700 block of East Tillman Road. There, they discovered a crashed vehicle and its occupants, victims of a sudden and brutal shooting.
Grandberry, the driver, was found with life-threatening injuries, having been shot in the head. A male passenger beside him had sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, while a third individual in the car was miraculously unharmed.
The investigation that followed, a joint effort by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Prosecutor's Office, and the Allen County Coroner's Office, would reveal the chilling nature of the attack. Authorities determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence, but a 'coordinated and premeditated' ambush. Surveillance footage played a crucial role in piecing together the events leading up to the incident, showing that the suspects had been at the same bar as Grandberry and his companions earlier that night. Despite the immediate medical attention he received, Javion Jaquan Grandberry succumbed to his injuries five days later, on December 29, 2023. The Allen County Coroner's Office confirmed that his death was a homicide caused by complications from the gunshot wound to his head, marking the 30th homicide in Fort Wayne and Allen County for the year.
The pursuit of justice for Grandberry's death led to the swift identification and apprehension of two suspects. On December 28, 2023, just a day before Grandberry passed away, police arrested 28-year-old Deondre T. Jones. Initially charged with attempted murder, the charges against Jones were upgraded to murder following Grandberry's death. A second suspect, 20-year-old Trivel D. Crum, was formally charged on January 8, 2024, with murder, two counts of attempted murder, and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.
The legal proceedings brought a measure of closure to the tragic case. Trivel D. Crum faced justice and was sentenced to a term of 155 years in prison for his role in the fatal ambush. In March 2025, a jury found Deondre T. Jones guilty of murder, attempted murder, and criminal recklessness, along with a sentence enhancement for the use of a firearm. His sentencing was scheduled for April of that year, where he faced a potential sentence of more than 160 years behind bars.
