On May 4, 2024, the life of 28-year-old White male Chad Alan Cardy was cut short in a violent incident on the north side of Indianapolis, Indiana. Born in Orlando, Florida, and a resident of Shelbyville, Cardy was known to his family and friends for his sense of humor and his history as a skilled soccer player.
The events unfolding in the early morning hours of that Saturday led Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers to the 600 block of East 38th Street.
Around 12:35 a.m., dispatchers received reports of a shooting in the area, prompting a swift law enforcement response. Upon arriving at the scene, first responders discovered Cardy outside a residence suffering from at least one apparent gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel transported him to a local hospital in critical condition, but despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police detained a person at the scene for questioning. However, initial reports from the IMPD indicated that no formal arrests were made at that time, and the individual’s specific involvement, if any, was not immediately publicly clarified by investigators. Detectives from the IMPD Homicide Office launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances leading up to the gunfire.
