In the early evening of September 30, 2024, a residence in the 700 block of I Street in Bedford, Indiana, became the scene of a fatal shooting. William 'Matt' Boggs, a 27-year-old male, was found deceased in the bathroom of the home with an apparent gunshot wound. Emergency personnel were called to the scene around 6:00 p.m. but pronounced Boggs dead upon their arrival.
Witnesses at the scene provided police with a description of the alleged shooter and the vehicle he fled in.
The suspect was identified as 34-year-old Adam T. Machida, also of Bedford. According to a witness, Courtney Blackwell, who was in the bathroom with Boggs, Machida kicked open the door and fired multiple shots at Boggs. Blackwell stated that the door struck her in the head as Machida forced it open. After the shooting, Machida fled the residence. Another witness, a female neighbor, received a message from Machida stating, 'I just shot him.'
Law enforcement utilized Flock camera technology to quickly locate Machida's red SUV. An Indiana State Police detective spotted the vehicle traveling east on US 50. With the assistance of the Brownstown Police Department, a traffic stop was conducted, and Machida was taken into custody without incident. A weapon believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered from his vehicle.
During questioning, Machida admitted to firing shots through the bathroom door, stating that he was aware he was targeting Boggs. He claimed he could have shot Blackwell but chose to shoot to the side of her, hitting Boggs. He told police he knew he had struck Boggs when he heard him fall. Machida has been charged with murder, unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. He has a prior conviction for armed robbery. Machida is being held without bond and will be represented by a public defender.
