A quiet evening of camaraderie among friends camping in the Hoosier National Forest took a tragic turn on April 20, 2018, resulting in the death of 21-year-old Daniel Barrett Allbright of French Lick, Indiana. A man known for his love of the outdoors, Allbright was with a group of friends at the Shirley Creek campgrounds when the fatal incident occurred.
According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, a 19-year-old friend of Allbright's became alarmed by a sound in the woods.
He drew a handgun and pointed it toward the noise. As he attempted to holster the weapon, it discharged, striking Allbright in the back of the head. The Orange County Coroner pronounced Daniel Allbright dead at the scene.
Investigators initially stated that they did not suspect foul play in the shooting. The case was handed over to the Orange County prosecutor's office to determine if any criminal charges would be filed against the 19-year-old, who was also from French Lick. The name of the friend who fired the shot was not publicly released in the immediate aftermath.
