Kent B. Quilling, a 40-year-old male, died on March 6, 2023, due to a shooting incident in East St. Louis, Illinois. His body was discovered by an Illinois State Police trooper who was patrolling the area. The trooper found Quilling in the street in front of a residence on Collinsville Road near Winstanley Avenue, approximately a half-mile north of St. Clair Avenue, around 9:15 a.m..
At the time of the discovery, Quilling was bleeding from the head.
As the trooper approached, he observed a man running into a nearby home. This individual was later identified as Dontez McCray, 27, of East St. Louis. State police called in a tactical team and surrounded the home, leading to McCray's arrest four hours later. Quilling was taken to a hospital in St. Louis, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Dontez McCray was charged with first-degree murder and held on $1 million bail. McCray has a prior criminal history in St. Clair County, including a 2020 case for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in East St. Louis and a conviction for a weapons offense from Washington Park in 2016.
Kent B. Quilling was born on August 8, 1982, and lived in East St. Louis. Funeral services for him were provided by Serenity Memorial Chapel.
