On September 6, 1908, Chief of Detectives Patrick Gill, a 38-year-old male from East St. Louis, Illinois, was tragically killed in the line of duty. Detective Gill, who was of Caucasian ethnicity, was responding to a residential burglary call on the 1100 block of Pennsylvania Avenue. The suspects had been observed by neighbors as they moved from one home to another, prompting the call to the police.
