The shooting happened just before 1 a.m. near the intersection of 106th and Sangamon, close to Jackie Robinson Park. Demea was sitting in the backseat of an SUV when she was shot in the head.
According to reports, Demea and her siblings were in the SUV, attempting to flee from an attempted robbery.
As they tried to get away, the individuals attempting the robbery began shooting at the vehicle. Despite their efforts to escape, Demea was struck by a bullet in the back of her head.
Demea was immediately taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Her family described her as an ambitious and intelligent teenager who was enrolled in nursing school and had aspirations to become a nurse. She was also a freshman at Hyde Park Academy High School and was known for her love of dancing, laughing, and excelling in her studies.
The incident has sparked significant outrage and calls for justice from the community. Community activists, including Andrew Holmes and Michael Airhart from the All Kids Matter Foundation, have condemned the violence and are offering rewards for any information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators. A total reward of $13,000, combined from Demea's family and community groups, is being offered for information that could lead to an arrest.
