Raymond C. Kilroy, a 47-year-old white male, was a dedicated police officer with the Chicago Police Department. On May 13, 1990, he tragically lost his life in the line of duty. Officer Kilroy, along with his partner, Officer Gregory Hauser, responded to a domestic disturbance call at 2158 North Nordica Avenue in Chicago. The call involved a woman, Florence C. Zuniga, and her 23-year-old grandson, Ramon Samuel Chavez. Upon arrival, the officers interviewed Ms.
Zuniga in her living room and then proceeded to the detached garage where Chavez was located.
As the officers questioned Chavez, he suddenly grabbed one of their service weapons and opened fire. Officer Kilroy was shot four times: once in the rear base of the head, once in the top of his left shoulder, once in the left chest, and once in the left arm. Officer Hauser was also shot multiple times. Both officers collapsed to the floor, and Chavez fled the scene. Officer Kilroy was transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival at 9:55 p.m. on May 13, 1990.
The investigation into Officer Kilroy's death led to the swift apprehension of Ramon Samuel Chavez. On May 14, 1990, at 2:22 a.m., Chavez was arrested by Patrolmen Harold Bone and Frank Ortiz from the Gang Crimes North Section. Chavez was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder and armed robbery. The case against Chavez was clear-cut, given the circumstances of the crime and the evidence gathered at the scene.
Officer Kilroy's death was a significant loss to the Chicago Police Department, where he had served for over 20 years. His dedication and service were honored by his colleagues and the community.
