On July 25, 2023, Jaylen I. Woods, a 19-year-old resident of Madison, Illinois, was fatally shot in a violent incident. The incident occurred around 1:00 PM in the 1700 block of Edwardsville Road, where officers from the Madison Police Department responded to a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, they found Jaylen lying in the backyard of a residence, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
In addition to Jaylen's death, a second person was also shot during the incident but survived their gunshot wound.
The Madison Police Department requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad to investigate Jaylen's death. The investigation, led by Maj. Nick Novacich of the Granite City PD, Inv. Benjamin Vise of the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department, and Sgt. Jarod Fravell of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, resulted in the identification of two suspects: Caleb William Jones and Frederick Isaiah Henley.
Caleb Jones, 23 years old, was charged with 1st Degree Murder, Attempted 1st Degree Murder, and Aggravated Battery with a Firearm. His bond was set at $3,000,000. Frederick Henley, 19 years old, was charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Felon in Possession of a Firearm, with a bond set at $80,000.
Jaylen I. Woods was born on August 5, 2003, and his death has been classified as a homicide. The case is ongoing, with the charges against the suspects reflecting the severity of the crimes committed.
