Gerald Wiley, a 35-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on June 7, 2021, in Madison, Illinois. The incident occurred during a robbery at a gas station where Wiley and his wife were present. According to reports, Wiley encountered a group of juveniles who attempted to rob him. In an effort to pursue the suspects, Wiley got into his car and chased after them. The pursuit ended near Fourth Street and Highland Avenue, where one of the suspects, 17-year-old Derek Miller, shot Wiley. The gunshot caused Wiley to crash his vehicle into a tree. When the police arrived, they found Wiley with a gunshot wound. He was immediately taken to Gateway Regional Medical Center but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
The investigation into Gerald Wiley's death was extensive. The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis was called in to assist with the case, deploying around 20 investigators. They followed over 60 leads and executed multiple search warrants. Derek Miller, the 17-year-old suspect, was charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery, and aggravated discharge of a firearm. Additionally, three other juveniles were charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery in juvenile court. Their identities were not disclosed due to their age.
