On April 16, 2016, 30-year-old Army veteran Adam C. Malaby was fatally shot near Sutton, Alaska, while attempting to photograph individuals engaged in target shooting. The incident occurred in the vicinity of Jonesville Mine Road, a popular yet unofficial shooting area known locally as "the Gravel Pits." According to Alaska State Troopers, Malaby inadvertently stepped into the line of fire of a person discharging a .40-caliber pistol, resulting in his death.
