Toyosi Bakare, a 28-year-old man originally from Nigeria and a resident of Joliet, Illinois, for the past three years, was fatally shot on January 21, 2023. The incident occurred at the Pheasant Run Apartments in unincorporated Joliet Township. Bakare suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The shooting was part of a series of violent incidents that took place on the same day.
Earlier, a 42-year-old man, Mario Guerrero, was shot in the leg in the 200 block of Davis Street in Joliet. The vehicle connected to both shootings was identified as a red Toyota Camry with Illinois license plate Q73 0412, registered to Romeo Nance, a Joliet resident with an extensive criminal history.
Romeo Nance was identified as the suspect in the shootings. On the same day, Nance also shot and killed seven members of his own family in two homes on West Acres Road in Joliet. The victims included his mother, Tamaeka Nance, and several siblings and nieces and nephews.
Following the shootings, Nance fled the area and was later found dead by suicide in Natalia, Texas. The 9mm handgun used by Nance to take his own life was determined to be the same weapon used to murder Toyosi Bakare.
In the subsequent investigation, Jon Hansen, a 24-year-old resident of Shorewood, was charged with aiding Romeo Nance in the fatal shooting of Toyosi Bakare and the non-fatal shooting of Mario Guerrero. Hansen was arrested and charged with three counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and one count of aggravated battery with a gun. He confessed to being with Nance during the shootings and to disposing of the gun used in the crimes into the DuPage River.
