On March 8, 2024, Delegance Crawl, a 36-year-old resident of Chicago, Illinois, was fatally shot in a violent altercation in the 7400 block of South Euclid. According to prosecutors, the incident began when Quijuan Lewis, a 20-year-old who was on parole for less than two months following a gun conviction, exited a car and hid behind another vehicle.
As Crawl walked down the street, looking at his phone, Lewis jumped out and attacked him, striking Crawl in the head with a gun multiple times during their struggle on the street.
Despite the assault, Crawl managed to pull out his own gun and engage in a shootout with Lewis. During the exchange, Lewis shot Crawl in the back of the head, while Crawl shot Lewis in the leg. Severely wounded, Crawl lay motionless on the ground, and Lewis fled the scene, running to a nearby gas station for help. At the gas station, Lewis hid his gun in a potato chip display.
In a dramatic turn of events, a passerby who has not been identified picked up Crawl’s gun from beside his body and followed Lewis to the gas station. The passerby then used Crawl’s gun to shoot Lewis multiple times in the buttocks before fleeing the scene. Chicago police recovered Lewis’ gun from the potato chip display and subsequently charged him with first-degree murder. Judge William Fahy granted the state’s detention petition, and Lewis is currently being held.
Quijuan Lewis had been released from prison on January 18, 2024, after serving a reduced sentence for an unlawful use of a weapon conviction. His parole status is now under review by state officials in light of these new allegations.
