On March 16, 2024, a fatal incident occurred on the inbound Bishop Ford Freeway near East 170th Street in South Holland, Illinois. Eric Satterwhite, a 50-year-old man from the area, was found shot to death after a rollover crash involving his vehicle, a blue Infiniti SUV. The incident happened just after 6 p.m., and when Illinois State Police troopers arrived, they found Satterwhite with gunshot wounds. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
Eric Satterwhite was described by his daughter, Nakia Satterwhite, as "the life of the party" and an excellent father who provided for his family and was a source of guidance for his nieces and nephews. He was a hard worker and a significant figure in his family's life, especially after the loss of his son to gun violence in 2010. Nakia Satterwhite expressed her deep grief and hope for justice in the wake of her father's tragic death.
The investigation led to the arrest of a 17-year-old boy from Lynwood, who was charged with first-degree murder. The teen was taken into custody on April 11, 2024, and a weapon was allegedly recovered. He is being held at the Riverdale Police Department pending his first court appearance. The expressway and the ramp from I-294 and I-80 to northbound I-94 were shut down temporarily while police investigated the incident, but were reopened by 5 a.m. the following day.
