Arianna Murphy, a 19-year-old from Chicago, was fatally shot in the early hours of Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024. The incident occurred at Poppy's Chat Room, a café located at 5333 W. Madison St. on the West Side of Chicago. According to police reports, a group of individuals were inside the café when an unknown person entered and opened fire, targeting the group.
Arianna, who was set to start nursing school in the summer of 2024 after graduating at the top of her class, was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene at 1:24 a.m.. She was described by her family and friends as a vibrant, outgoing, and loving person who was not typically a partygoer but had decided to join her friends for a night out.
In addition to Arianna's death, four other females were injured in the shooting. A 20-year-old woman suffered graze wounds to her left leg and face, a 19-year-old woman was shot in her left ankle, a 17-year-old girl was shot in her right leg and was in critical condition, and a 16-year-old girl was shot in her right toe.
The Chicago Police Department is still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and has released surveillance footage of six individuals, all males between the ages of 15 and 25, who they believe were involved in the incident. The footage shows one person passing a smartphone to another, another holding a camera, and one individual carrying what appears to be a gun. Police are seeking the public's help in identifying and locating these individuals.
Arianna's family has spoken out, seeking justice and expressing their heartbreak over her loss. Her father, Henry Hunt, and other family members have described her as an innocent bystander who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The community has come together to hold peace rallies and call for an end to the violence plaguing the city.
