On July 4, 2024, a tragic mass shooting occurred in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The incident took place around 6:15 a.m. in the 7100 block of South Woodlawn, where police responded to a ShotSpotter detection alert. Upon arrival, officers found five family members shot inside a home: two women and three boys.
The victims included two women, Nakeeshia Strong, 45, and Caprice Edwards, 24, who were both pronounced dead.
Strong was pronounced dead at the scene, while Edwards died at the University of Chicago Hospital after being taken there for treatment. The three boys, ages 5, 7, and 8, were critically injured and transported to Comer Children’s Hospital. One of the 8-year-old boys, identified as Bryson Orr, later succumbed to his injuries following surgery.
Bryson Orr was one of the three children who were shot during the incident. He belonged to the family of Nakeeshia Strong, with the other injured boys being his relatives. The shooting is believed to have stemmed from a personal dispute, with multiple shooters opening fire on the residence before fleeing the scene.
The family and community have been deeply affected by this tragedy. Markita Scott, Edwards' mother, expressed her sorrow over the loss of her daughter and the trauma faced by the surviving children. The two other boys, including an 8-year-old cousin of Bryson named Jacoby, are facing a long and challenging recovery process, both physically and psychologically. Despite the lack of arrests, the family remains determined to seek justice and hold the perpetrators accountable for their actions.
The incident was part of a violent Fourth of July weekend in Chicago, which saw multiple mass shootings and numerous casualties across the city. Mayor Brandon Johnson and other officials have expressed their condolences to the families and communities affected, and the city has committed to taking steps to support the healing process and work towards a safer city.
