On July 10, 2024, Stephen Monigan, a 68-year-old male resident of Cahokia Heights, Illinois, was found deceased in his home located in the 2000 block of Maple Tree Lane. The cause of death was determined to be from apparent gunshot wounds.
The incident was reported at approximately 7:25 a.m., prompting a response from the Cahokia Heights Police Department. Upon arrival, police officers discovered Monigan's body inside his residence.
The Cahokia Heights Police Department requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad to investigate Monigan's death. As part of this investigation, it was revealed that Vermonica L. Turley, a 56-year-old known acquaintance of Monigan, was involved in the incident. Consequently, Turley was charged with 1st Degree Murder in connection with Monigan's death.
Monigan's death marked the eighth homicide in Cahokia Heights for the year 2024, a city with a population of about 17,000 residents.
The investigation was led by Lt. Patrick Feldhake of the O’Fallon Police Department, with additional support from Sgt. Andrew Johnson of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office and Det. Shawn O’Dell of the Belleville Police Department. Monigan was pronounced dead at about 8:30 a.m. by St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr..
