On September 1, 2024, a shooting occurred at the Private Mathis Manor Apartments in the 5900 block of Mitchell Avenue in Cahokia Heights, Illinois. Three individuals were struck by gunfire during the incident. Among them was 22-year-old Jacquan Firkins, who was critically injured and transported to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Despite medical efforts, Firkins succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 9:53 a.m. on September 3.
