Chevelle Carter, a 32-year-old man from Calumet Park, Illinois, was shot and killed on the evening of October 19, 2024, in the Oakland neighborhood of Chicago. The incident occurred around 8:40 p.m. near the intersection of 38th Street and Ellis Avenue. Police responded to the scene and found Carter with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.
According to witnesses, two gunmen were involved in the shooting. After firing the shots, the gunmen fled the scene in a white vehicle.
Carter was immediately taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
As of the morning after the shooting, no one was in custody, and Area 1 detectives were investigating the incident. The medical examiner later confirmed Carter's identity.
Chevelle Carter had a prior history with law enforcement. In August 2023, he was charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding, and attempting to elude a peace officer after leading police on a high-speed chase through the western suburbs. During this incident, three loaded handguns were recovered from his vehicle, and he had an outstanding fugitive warrant for a probation violation related to vehicle theft charges.
The death of Chevelle Carter was followed by another tragic event when his sister, Rhomesha Turner, was shot and killed on November 2, 2024, while participating in his funeral procession in the south suburban area of Dixmoor. Turner's death is being investigated by Dixmoor police and the Illinois State Police, with some speculating that her shooting might have been retaliation for her brother's death.
