In the early morning hours of January 14, 2023, a domestic dispute in a Lilburn, Georgia, home ended in the shooting death of 45-year-old Felipe Velasco. Gwinnett County police were called to a residence on Fox Forest Court around 12:40 a.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Velasco inside the home, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Gwinnett County Police Department quickly identified 19-year-old Miguel Rodriguez, also known as Miguel Rodriguez-Escut, as the suspect in the fatal shooting. Investigators determined that Rodriguez was at Velasco's home when an argument between the two men escalated, leading to the deadly gunfire. Authorities stated that the two men were acquainted and that the motive for the shooting was believed to be domestic in nature. Following the incident, police sought the public's help in locating Rodriguez, who had fled the scene.
A few days after the shooting, Miguel Rodriguez surrendered to authorities, turning himself in at the Gwinnett County Detention Center. He was subsequently charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
