That evening, at the Fitzroy Townhomes off Boy Scout Road, a domestic
dispute escalated to a fatal conclusion. Commen Gunn was shot and killed in her home. When Richmond County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene just before 10:00 p.m., they were met with a volatile situation. The suspect, identified as Commen's 52-year-old husband, Shawn Gunn, refused to exit the residence. The standoff intensified when Shawn Gunn fired at the deputies from the front door. The officers returned fire, striking him.
After the exchange of gunfire, law enforcement entered the townhome and discovered Commen Gunn's body in an upstairs bathroom. She had been shot at least once. Shawn Gunn was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Following his release from the hospital, he was arrested and booked into the Richmond County Jail. He was expected to be charged with Murder and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime.
