In a quiet subdivision in Covington, Georgia, the life of 20-year-old Braxton Singleton was cut short in a burst of violence on the afternoon of April 3, 2023. What investigators believe to have been a drug deal gone wrong escalated into a fatal shooting, leaving one man dead and another critically injured. The incident unfolded in the Wildcat Creek Estates, where deputies from the Newton County Sheriff's Office were dispatched following reports of a 'penetrating trauma'. Upon their arrival, they discovered Singleton deceased in a vehicle and a 21-year-old male with critical injuries.
The investigation into Singleton's death led to a series of arrests over the following months. On May 26, 2023, the Newton County Sheriff's Office took three individuals into custody. Amin Ya-Sin, a 21-year-old from Covington, was charged with murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and marijuana-related offenses. On the same day, 18-year-old Eva Simmons and 46-year-old Kristiana Simmons were arrested and charged with tampering with evidence in connection with the case.
The search for another key suspect continued, and on June 27, 2024, authorities arrested 21-year-old Julius Dennis of Conyers. Dennis had initially been considered a possible third victim after checking himself into Gwinnett Medical Center with injuries on the day of the shooting. However, further investigation revealed his alleged involvement, leading to a warrant for his arrest. At the time the warrant was issued, Dennis was already incarcerated in DeKalb County on unrelated charges since April 30, 2023.
