On February 6, 2025, 18-year-old Hispanic male Jonathan Muñoz Mata was fatally shot in Redwood City, California. The incident occurred around 1:40 a.m. on the 500 block of Adams Street, near a Whole Foods Market. Responding officers found Jonathan lying in the street with a single gunshot wound to the torso. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Later that day, police were called to a family disturbance involving a 15-year-old male who had allegedly assaulted a relative. Investigators identified this juvenile as a person of interest in Jonathan's death. After establishing probable cause, the 15-year-old was arrested and booked into the San Mateo County Youth Services Center on suspicion of murder. Due to his age, authorities have not released his name.
Jonathan Muñoz Mata was born on December 8, 2006, in Palo Alto, California, and resided in Redwood City. Described by his mother, Aracely Mata, as a resilient and accomplished young man, he was a cherished companion to his family. Jonathan is survived by his mother and two younger siblings, Jaqueline, 9, and Micheal, 12. In the wake of his passing, his family organized a fundraiser to support his memorial service.
Funeral services for Jonathan were held on February 19, 2025, at Crippen & Flynn Woodside Chapel in Redwood City, followed by interment at Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo.
The Redwood City Police Department has indicated that the shooting appears to have been an isolated incident between individuals known to each other, with no ongoing threat to the community.
