In the early hours of Sunday, April 30, 2023, a dispute outside a bar on Mitchell Bridge Road in Athens, Georgia, escalated into a burst of gunfire that left one young man dead and three other people wounded. Marquise Darieon Jackson, a 21-year-old male from Athens, was found by police with a gunshot wound and was rushed to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The three other individuals who were injured in the incident were also taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Athens-Clarke County Police Department responded to the scene in the 1100 block of Mitchell Bridge Road at approximately 12:55 a.m. Preliminary information from the ongoing investigation suggested that an altercation between Jackson and at least one suspect led to the shooting. At the time of the initial reports, law enforcement had not identified any suspects and no arrests had been made in connection with the fatal shooting.
In the wake of the violence, authorities appealed to the public for assistance in gathering information about the incident. A reward of up to $1,000 was offered by Crime Stoppers for any information that would lead to the identification and arrest of the person or persons responsible for Jackson's death. The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing as police continue to seek answers and bring those responsible to justice.
